What are cookies?

Cookies are portions of code (computer files or partial data files) sent by a server to the user’s web browser. From this browser they are automatically stored to the user’s computer and sent back to the server automatically when needed or whenever the site is visited. Usually, a cookie contains the name of the website from which it comes, its lifetime (the amount of time it will remain on the user’s device) and a value, which is usually a unique number generated casually. At each subsequent visit, cookies are sent back to the website where they were created (first-party cookies) or another site that recognises them (third-party cookies). Cookies are useful in allowing a website to recognise a user’s device and they also have different purposes such as, for example, allowing efficient browsing over several pages, remembering favourite sites and in general, improving the browsing experience. They also help to guarantee that advertising content viewed online is more dedicated to users and their interests.
If the user decides to disable cookies, this may influence and/or limit their browsing experience in the site, and for example, they may not be able to visit specific sections of a website or receive customised information.

How to disable cookies

The operating modes and options to limit or block cookies can be regulated by changing your browser settings. Most browsers are set to accept cookies by default; however, users can change these settings to block cookies or to be warned every time a cookie is sent to their device. There are different ways to manage cookies and for this purpose, it is necessary to see the instruction manual or help screen for your browser to see how to adjust or change its settings. Users can edit the pre-sets and disable (block) cookies by setting a higher protection level.
